Matthew Macfadyen: Ripper Street Set to Return to Dublin on April 29 16:10 : By Gearóid Gilmore (IFTN)

The second series of the Irish co-production ‘Ripper Street’ will begin shooting in Dublin later this month.

The hit TV series, which is aired by the BBC, will return to filming in the Clancy Barracks in Dublin later this month and is set to continue filming until August 31st.

The first series was set in London’s East End in Whitechapel in the year 1889; six months after the infamous Jack the Ripper murders. When more women are murdered on the streets of Whitechapel, Detective Inspector Edmund Reid (played by Matthew Macfadyen), Detective Sergeant Bennett Drake (Jerome Flynn), and US Army Captain Homer Jackson (Adam Rothenberg) begin to investigate the killings. Fears that Jack the Ripper has returned begin to surface in the disadvantaged district.

Thanks to Universal Sony, we got access to a very interesting Q&A with 2 of the stars of Anna Karenina, Matthew Macfadyen and Alicia Vikander.

Q. Matthew, what kind of man is Oblonsky in the movie?

A. Oblonsky is a lover of pleasures of the flesh. He likes women and food and drink. He is a social animal and is not introspective and is not burdened with a sense of guilt about his actions. But he is not a callous man. He loves his friends and he loves the love of his friends, and he fails a bit in his own marriage.

Q.But he tries to bring happiness to others…

A. Absolutely, yes. And that is quite touching. He is a perceptive man about people and their behaviour but can’t always shine that perception on his own relationships.

Q. Alicia, how is Kitty’s heart broken in Anna Karenina and how is that, ultimately, a positive thing?

A. At the start of the movie Kitty is very young and is introduced to society and she probably thinks that Count Vronsky is the Prince Charming who will come to steal her heart. But suddenly her own idea of life and love is torn down after Vronsky falls for Anna. And through that she starts to see life and herself another way and she becomes a woman and is able to look back and see that the person she really loved was with her the whole time [Levin, played by Domhnall Gleeson].

Most British actors may hanker after parts in Hollywood blockbusters, but Tom Hollander, who is best known for playing the priest in Rev, says the experience left him feeling neither very satisfied, nor very rich.

Of his role as Lord Cutler Beckett, the “heavy” in Pirates of the Caribbean, he recalls that, while the production was “staggeringly expensive”, he was “badly” paid

Speaking at the Names Not Numbers Festival at Aldeburgh in Suffolk, the 45-year-old actor said that whenever he was allowed time off, he got as far away from the set as possible.

“It was a way of getting my own back. When they changed the schedule at the last minute, I would say, 'That’s fine, but I’m in Calcutta’, and they would say 'No problem’, and I would be airlifted out of the Third World in Lufthansa first class.”

He felt that there was a camaraderie among the character actors involved in the project and they all tended to compare notes in the smoking room of Miami airport.

Sometimes people fake their own deaths to escape danger. In the case of Arthur Newman, he's just escaping his disappointment of a life. Colin Firth plays a has-been golfer who fakes his death, abandons his family, and takes on the new titular identity. On the path to his new life, he encounters a young woman (Emily Blunt) who's running from problems of her own. The two fall in love as they take solace in pretending to be married, or engaged or whatever feels right, seemingly living the dream. But they can't pretend forever. It's strange to hear Firth as an American, but he works well with Blunt in this first trailer.

Much-loved spy drama 'Spooks' could make the move to the big screen, with one of its stars revealing that there is a script in the works, being penned by the original writers of the hit series.

"There is a script kind of in the machine," HuffPostUK has learned from actor Peter Firth, who played MI5 chief Harry Pearce throughout the ten series of the popular drama.

"They should make it," he adds. "It's not like it's a gamble with this one. But it costs a lot, and there's not a lot of money to go round at the moment."

This would suit Firth, who previously told HuffPostUK that he wished for a happier ending for his character with longtime colleague and barely-expressed love - Ruth Evershed, played by Nicola Walker. Viewers of the series finale in October 2011 watched goggle-eyed, as Ruth became one of Spooks' huge number of agents to fall for her country, or in the actors' case, the dramatic storyline.

'Mr. Selfridge' could profit from 'Downton Abbey' love Carol Memmott (USA TODAY)

Can Mr. Selfridge cash in on the phenomenal success of Downton Abbey? Will the love affairs of a store's clerks and wealthy patrons enthrall viewers as much as the downstairs-upstairs goings-on at the Grantham estate?

Like Downton, Mr. Selfridge is a lavish costume drama, premiering on PBS' Masterpiece Sunday (9 ET/PT, times may vary). Also set in early 20th-century England, it's the rags-to-riches story of Harry Gordon Selfridge, the charismatic, American entrepreneur who in 1909 threw open the doors to Selfridge's, welcoming London and the world to the first truly modern department store.

"No one does period drama better than the Brits," says Jeremy Piven, the three-time Emmy-winning actor who played Hollywood agent Ari Gold in HBO's Entourage, and who stars as the bigger-than-life Selfridge. The timing, he says, couldn't be better.


"If you would have said three years ago that America would fall in love with a period drama that takes place at the turn of the century, with a group of British actors Americans weren't familiar with, that it would be a hit and it was on PBS, I think it would be hard to wrap your mind around it," Piven says.

But Mr. Selfridge is banking on more than good timing. The eight-part series is written by Andrew Davies, who has smitten audiences worldwide with screenplays based on classic characters and stories. His Pride and Prejudice, based on Jane Austen's iconic novel, will forever evoke an image of Mr. Darcy's (Colin Firth) toned torso encased in a clingy, wet white shirt.

"Mr. Selfridge is the story of one man's life, a pretty remarkable man at that, and it's a family story and a workplace story," says Davies, who loosely based the series on British writer Lindy Woodhead's 2007 biography Shopping, Seduction & Mr. Selfridge.

Matthew Macfadyen: Buring reunites with Macfadyen

MyAnna Buring has said it was like working with an "old friend" when she reunited with her Ripper Street co-star Matthew Macfadyen for the big screen.

The actress shot Epic, due out next year, with Matthew in Georgia, after filming BBC One drama Ripper Street together.

"It's been great, lovely," she said of working with Matthew on the movie, the story of an English filmmaker who is hired to direct a huge production in the Caucasus region of Europe.

"It's like working with an old mate the second time around so it's fun."

MyAnna, who attended the First Light Awards this week, to celebrate the next generation of British filmmakers, is about to start working on a second series of Ripper Street, which has been recommissioned despite complaints it was too violent.

Emily Blunt, Eddie Redmayne, Tom Felton - Stars Back Charity Campaign To Wipe Out Tropical Disease 15 March 2013 (CONTACT MUSIC)

Stars including Emily Blunt, Eddie Redmayne and Tom Felton are calling on fans to support a campaign to wipe out seven diseases that affect millions of families worldwide.

The actors have joined forces with End7, a charity initiative aiming to stamp out tropical diseases including ringworm and elephantiasis, and filmed an emotional appeal urging fans to donate to the worthy cause.

In the video, Redmayne, Blunt and Felton watch clips of victims of the gruesome diseases and their reactions are filmed. Blunt and Redmayne struggle to control their emotions while Harry Potter star Felton walks away in distress.

Ripper Street Season 1 Review “What Use Our Work” (TV EQUALS)

On last week’s Ripper Street, Captain Jackson’s former Pinkerton colleague set him up as the murderer of a prostitute. It seemed from the preview that the season finale was going to focus on clearing Jacksons name and quelling public panic over the return of Jack the Ripper. In an interesting twist, neither of these turned out to be the case.

The police station is still grieving at the loss of Hobbs. In an incredibly touching scene, the policemen come together in a bar to mourn their fallen colleague. Drake, a man typically quick to show anger or toughness, is overwhelmed with emotion and stands before them with tears in his eyes. He is angry, though, at Inspector Reid, who he thinks is out of touch with the lives and concerns of his men. For his part, Reid is equally affected by Hobbs’ death, but realizes that he never took the time to get to know Hobbs when he was alive. For example, he didn’t know Hobbs was married.

These shortcomings in Reid’s professional life are eclipsed by the ruins of his personal life. He previously shared a passionate kiss with Mrs. Goren, but goes even further when he shows up at her bedroom. While this is not the best course of action, it is not surprising considering how cold his wife has been towards him. Everything about Emily is stiff and unwelcoming – her manner of speech, hair, clothes, and avoidance of much physical contact. Unfortunately, Reid doesn’t get the solace he’s searching for from Mrs. Goren. In a rather abrupt manner, she shuts down his efforts to tell her about the search for a man who may have information about his daughter. Reid is so broken and alone. It’s tragic.

Novelist Jane Austen's best-known work, "Pride & Prejudice," turned 200 on Jan. 17. This weekend, the Jane Austen Literary Festival will celebrate this literary landmark by focusing on the novel during its sixth annual event in Mandeville.

As a prelude to the festivities, I've decided to settle in at home on Friday night and watch the 2005 film version of the novel -- the one featuring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen.

Why don't you watch along with me?

Here's how: Grab a cup of tea and a biscuit; then, at precisely 7 p.m. on Friday, March 8, hit play on your DVD. If you don't have it, the film is available at Barnes and Noble as well as through various services, such as Hulu.

(This is not my favorite adaptation. That, of course, is the BBC miniseries starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. I cannot, however, ask you to tackle that with me: It's five lovely hours long. That's just too much of a commitment on such short notice.)

The anniversary has drawn attention to the novel, published just four years before Austen's death in 1817. I first read it at age 14 and then again and again and again.

Set in London's rough East End in 1890, "Ripper Street" tells the story of H Division, the police precinct charged with keeping order in the aftermath of Jack the Ripper's reign of terror. Rothenberg plays American Homer Jackson, an ex-Army surgeon and ex-Pinkerton detective recruited by Inspector Edmund Reid (Matthew Macfadyen) to help the police, including Reid's right-hand man, Sgt. Bennet Drake (Jerome Flynn), to solve crimes.  

Just as Jackson's the only American working with H Division, Rothenberg was the only American on set during filming.

"I don't want to say [it was] totally life imitating art because I'm not nearly as interesting as Homer," he told me during a phone call from Gramercy, N.Y., where he lives. "But, yeah, there was a lot of that ... and that really helped in the flavor of the show. I actually kind of learned what being an American was all about by being surrounded by people who weren't. And, of course, that's part of what the show explores."

How Jackson, the consummate outsider, fits in with his new British "friends" has been one of the series more interesting aspects. Reid asked, then cajoled and then threatened him to remain at the inspector's beck and call to perform autopsies and use the burgeoning science of forensics to help solve cases. A fan of any vice you can imagine, Jackson's also gambled, gotten drunk (many times), been beaten up and clashed with the more straight-laced Drake, as well as Long Susan Hart (Myanna Buring), with whom he shares a dark secret.
