Thanks to Universal Sony, we got access to a very interesting Q&A with 2 of the stars of Anna Karenina, Matthew Macfadyen and Alicia Vikander.

Q. Matthew, what kind of man is Oblonsky in the movie?

A. Oblonsky is a lover of pleasures of the flesh. He likes women and food and drink. He is a social animal and is not introspective and is not burdened with a sense of guilt about his actions. But he is not a callous man. He loves his friends and he loves the love of his friends, and he fails a bit in his own marriage.

Q.But he tries to bring happiness to others…

A. Absolutely, yes. And that is quite touching. He is a perceptive man about people and their behaviour but can’t always shine that perception on his own relationships.

Q. Alicia, how is Kitty’s heart broken in Anna Karenina and how is that, ultimately, a positive thing?

A. At the start of the movie Kitty is very young and is introduced to society and she probably thinks that Count Vronsky is the Prince Charming who will come to steal her heart. But suddenly her own idea of life and love is torn down after Vronsky falls for Anna. And through that she starts to see life and herself another way and she becomes a woman and is able to look back and see that the person she really loved was with her the whole time [Levin, played by Domhnall Gleeson].

Sometimes people fake their own deaths to escape danger. In the case of Arthur Newman, he's just escaping his disappointment of a life. Colin Firth plays a has-been golfer who fakes his death, abandons his family, and takes on the new titular identity. On the path to his new life, he encounters a young woman (Emily Blunt) who's running from problems of her own. The two fall in love as they take solace in pretending to be married, or engaged or whatever feels right, seemingly living the dream. But they can't pretend forever. It's strange to hear Firth as an American, but he works well with Blunt in this first trailer.

Ripper Street Saturday at 9 p.m., BBC America

I’ve enjoyed this series, which wraps for the season on Saturday night. “Ripper Street” is yet another TV crime procedural, but the primitive forensics and the Victorian setting, with its killing poverty and moral hypocrisies, make it stand out. The writers manage to turn each murder case into more than just a whodunit, with themes about the brutality of war, labor strikes, and psychiatry. And Matthew Macfadyen has been a formidable lead. The series has been renewed for a second season.

Colin told us: 'I had to wait on stand-by to make an entrance at the lift doors and the Savoy, understandably, had not taken it upon themselves to advise every single one of their guests that there was a film taking place with a man without his trousers in the lobby. Self-conscious? Yes!’


And that wasn’t his only pain as he continued with the story adding: ‘Cameron Diaz, being the kind and sweet and supportive colleague she was, assured me there was nothing to worry about with my legs, and they were magnificent specimens. Actually, she burst into a spontaneous belly laugh!’

COLIN FIRTH: Tom Shadyac Eyes Untouchable Remake, With Colin Firth Circling MARCH 1, 2013 BY TIM ISAAC

Last year Untouchable (aka The Intouchables) became the highest grossing French movie in history, taking over $400 million around the world. It’s little wonder then that Hollywood is interested in a remake. Now Deadline reports that a perhaps surprising name is attached to direct, Tom Shadyac – best known for broad comedy hits Liar Liar, Bruce Almighty, The Nutty Professor and Ace Ventura.

Colin Firth is said to be circling a lead role, but nothing has been set in stone yet. Back in November, it was reported that Silver Linings Playbook star Chris Tucker had showed interest in the movie, but it’s not known if he’s still involved.

RIPPER STREET: 5.2M Tune In To ‘Ripper Street’ Season Finale 28 Feb 2013 : By Eva Hall (IFTN)

More than five million viewers tuned into the series finale of Irish/UK co-production ‘Ripper Street’ last Sunday night.

5.2 million people watched the eighth and final episode of series one, which saw Detective Reid, played by Matthew Macfadyen, attempt to end a slavery ring in Whitechapel.

The period drama aired on BBC One for eight weeks, starring Macfadyen (Pride and Prejudice) and Jerome Flynn (Game of Thrones) as policemen, and Adam Rothenberg as a doctor. The trio were shown trying to instill order in the East London town of Whitechapel, during the aftermath of the Jack the Ripper murders.

The series shot entirely in Dublin last summer, and was a co-production between Ireland’s Element Pictures and the UK’s Tiger Aspect Productions and Lookout Point. All post production was also carried out in Dublin, with Egg Post Production working on all picture and sound post-production and Screen Scene looking after VFX.

The series has already been commissioned for a second run by the BBC, however it has not yet been confirmed whether it will return to the Clancy Barracks location of season one. Creator Richard Warlow will return for series two.
