When actors work on set, their every need is catered for. And when Benedict Cumberbatch, the Sherlock actor who was once described as looking like a Meerkat in a Magimix, is delivered his coffee in a Styrofoam cup, he has his own sardonic way of making the experience more fun.

‘I try to get [the assistants] to write Sir Benedict on the cup,’ he says. ‘Occasionally, they oblige.’

As it turns out, he may not be a Sir but he is even posher than most of his fans previously thought.

It is well known that Cumberbatch, who this week started making the highly-anticipated third BBC series of Sherlock, grew up in Kensington and went to Harrow School (fees £32,160 a year).

However, despite giving dozens of interviews, he has never previously disclosed quite how illustrious his background is.

Why? Well, Cumberbatch is rather touchy about the subject of class. He told the Radio Times in August that he was fed up with ‘all the posh-bashing that goes on … It’s all so predictable. So domestic,  so dumb. It makes me think I want to go  to America.’

He continued, with some energy: ‘I wasn’t born into land or titles, or new money, or  an oil rig.’

Fair enough. But while his family isn’t exactly rolling in it, the Cumberbatches have long been extremely eminent in society circles — so much so that The Times newspaper extensively covered the 1934 wedding of his grandfather, Henry Carlton Cumberbatch, a submarine commander who was decorated in both World Wars.

Unusually, The Times illustrated the piece with a picture as well as a full description of the bride’s dress, flowers and headdress and a comprehensive list of the guests.


Henry Carlton Cumberbatch, by the way, was also described as a noted crack shot with a rifle, an exceptional rower and a ‘strong’ tennis player. His manly charm was noted by fellow officers.

Perhaps Benedict, who favours extreme sports such as paragliding and skydiving, gets some of his physical derring-do from that side of the family.

I can also reveal that his great-grandfather, Henry Alfred Cumberbatch, was the British Consul General in Smyrna, Turkey, and ruffled feathers with his protests against the slave trade in the area at the time.

Records show that in a single month in 1872, he made seven reports to the Foreign Office on the subject — and was instructed to turn a blind eye to the issue, and leave it to local authorities instead. He was also banned from sheltering slaves at the embassy.

Later, in recognition of his diplomatic service, he was created CMG — an honour sometimes known as ‘Call Me God’, a Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael & St George.

Both men sound like the sort of relatives who would make one burst with pride. So why has Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch kept so quiet about them?

It seems Cumberbatch is rather sweetly angst-ridden about his high beginnings and the way he is publicly perceived. Nevertheless, he struggles to quash his patrician sense of proper standards.

Take the way he bemoaned modern culture in a recent interview: ‘It’s very hard getting into the car in the morning and listening to some radio station and thinking, “This is the level that people are engaging at on quite a few conversations.” ’

He went on: ‘I’m a firm believer in audiences being so much more intelligent than the s*** they get fed.’

Actor Tom Hiddleston is one of Britain’s hottest Hollywood exports — but he is eyeing a return to the West End stage to keep his skills honed.

The star, set to reprise his role as Loki in Thor: The Dark World, says his north London flat’s kitchen table is groaning under the weight of theatre scripts.

Hiddleston, 32, always kept one toe in the West End during his rapid rise, with his last outing being The Kingdom of Earth at the Criterion Theatre last year.

He said: “My table in the kitchen is where I work and read scripts — and it’s literally littered with plays right now. I’m on different, modern things, American classics, Shakespeare, Jacobean stuff. I really want to find something big and meaty and exciting.

“Theatre tests you. It stops you being insecure with the film set idea of action and cut.

Tom Hiddleston Joins 'The Muppets 2' as the Great Escapo Shhhhh, don't tell anyone... it's a secret. BY: BRAD BREVET PUBLISHED: SUNDAY, MARCH 24TH 2013 AT 8:50 PM

It would appear one bit of casting for the upcoming The Muppets sequel, The Muppets... Again!, that was meant to be kept secret has leaked out as the blog Muppets Henson (via Bleeding Cool) noticed on Tom Hiddleston's client page at Hamilton Hodell included a note he would star in the film as the Great Escapo.

The page has since been updated after the news leaked but Tumblr blog Taste of Hiddles grabbed the following screen capture confirming the news.

Unfortunately there is no additional character information, but feel free to speculate.

Tom Hiddleston wants to work with Daniel Day-Lewis

Speaking to BANG Showbiz at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards 2013, where he picked up the Times Breakthrough Award, Tom said: ''I'd love to have a chance, even a chance, of trying to work with Daniel Day-Lewis because I admire him so much. I am so intrigued. He's always inspired me.

''Just the commitment he takes on every time he chooses to work and kind of what he chooses. You can always see this. He gives 110%.''

The 31-year-old actor - whose CV includes 'War Horse' and 'The Hollow Crown' - once had the chance to meet his idol and ruined the moment by ''gushing'' about how much he loved his work.

He reminisced: ''I met him once, a couple of years ago. It was long before I'd made a film and I was working in theatre and I happened to be somebody's plus one [to an event]. I stopped him on the stairs as I had to tell him he's one of the greatest things; being an actor.

''He said, in his beautiful English/Irish [accent], 'Thank you so much, it means a lot, thank you so much'. It was basically me gushing about how much I loved 'In the Name of the Father' and 'The Last of the Mohicans'.''

As someone who has played the villain in both Thor and The Avengers, nobody knows what it’s like to be a Marvel bad guy better than Tom Hiddleston (A.K.A. Loki, Thor’s spiteful brother).

So when Hiddleston weighed in on Christopher Eccleston’s performance as Malekith the Accursed in Thor: The Dark World, we were interested to hear what he had to say.

In a recent interview with Red Carpet News TV (which comes to us via Comic Book Movie), Hiddleston was effusive in his praise of Eccleston and hinted at the complex relationship between Loki and Malekith. Check out the key responses below:

“Christopher Eccleston is one of Britain’s greatest actors, he brings a degree of commitment, intelligence, conviction and complexity to everything he does. I think he really got his teeth into this thing [playing Malekith]. It’s hard to say anything without giving away too much. Christopher has enormous presence, which is very distinguishable on stage as well as film. It’s one of those things you can’t really define, you just can’t stop watching him when he’s on screen. I think he’ll be absolutely magnetic [in the movie]. Malekith has his own ambition. Whether or not Loki can coincide with or contradict, subvert or enhance that ambition remains to be seen.”

Okay, so we can’t read much into this interview because it’s not like Hiddleston is going to bash one of his co-stars. However, the way that Hiddleston hesitated before talking about the relationship between Loki and Malekith raises some interesting questions.

It was a mystery that Sherlock Holmes himself might have struggled to solve – the curious case of the heart-throb actor and the cyber-stalker.

Someone, it seems, was snooping on the home of Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays a contemporary version of Arthur Conan Doyle’s sleuth in the hit TV series Sherlock, and documenting his actions in real time on a social networking site.

Old Harrovian Cumberbatch, 36, was so unnerved he considered calling the police. 


But after some detective work of his own, he apparently discovered the culprit was a star-struck neighbour. 

‘I would say that it was the strangest fan experience that I’ve ever had. I had someone live-tweeting my movements while I was in my own house,’ he said.

Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed that he and co-star Martin Freeman are on board for a fourth season of the BBC1 hit drama.

The 36-year-old said that he would love for the series to continue for “as long as possible” as he picked up the television drama prize for Parade’s End at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards.

"We've agreed to two more series but I could get into trouble for saying that," he told radiotimes.com.

"All I know at the moment is I'm doing these three [episodes of the upcoming series] and another three."

And although keen to carry on with more episodes beyond the next run, Cumberbatch did admit that the show’s future did depend on the availability of not only himself and The Hobbit star, but writer Steven Moffat too.

"We love doing it as we are doing it at the moment in the format we are doing it," he said.

"I'd love to keep it going for as long as possible, I think we all would."

British actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston have both won awards at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards, Tuesday, March 12, 2013, in London.

Strictly speaking, Cumberbatch’s award was an indirect one. He starred in Parade’s End, which won the Best TV Drama Award. Would it have done so if he were not in it? Would it have garnered as many viewers?

I don’t think so, and neither does Susanna White, who directed the series. She told Britain’s Radio Times:  “I think Benedict is one of the finest actors of his generation. And we were really lucky to get him because without him, Parade’s End would be nothing like it is.”

Parade’s End is set in the days before, during and after World War I and is based on a series of novels by Ford Madox Ford. It can be still be seen on HBO and HBO Canada. (Click to see the HBO schedule, or the HBO Canada schedule.)

As for Tom Hiddleston, The Guardian reported that he: “. . .picked up the Times breakthrough award for his acting in The Hollow Crown and films including War Horse and Avengers Assemble.”

The Hollow Crown was a four-part BBC series of Shakespeare’s plays: Richard II; Henry IV, Part 1; Henry IV, Part 2; Henry V. Tom Hiddleston was in all of them except for Richard II. He played Prince Hal, son of Henry IV, and then went on to play Henry V. The series was shown in Britain in 2012 as part of that country’s Olympic celebrations, and will be shown on PBS in the U.S. (much) later this year.

Hiddleston played the troubled villain Loki (fangirls love to love him) in Thor and the film that’s simply known as The Avengers in other countries.  It’s called Avengers Assemble in Britain to distinguish it from the TV series that starred Diana Rigg and Patrick Macnee. (Oh! The Internet says that Macnee is 91. Bravo! )

Tom Hiddleston looks up to Daniel Day-Lewis (FAN SHARE)

Tom Hiddleston is slowly starting to build an impressive resume for himself in Hollywood, but he admits that there's no one he looks up to more than Daniel Day-Lewis. The Thor 2 star recently won the Best Breakthrough at the South Bank Sky Art Awards, but he has maintained that he has a long way to go before he's in the league of actors like Day-Lewis.

While discussing his recently wrapped films, including Thor 2 and Only Lovers Left Alive, Hiddleston admitted that he's trying to find theater work next. He explains that he's sifting through scripts, saying, "I always try to stay true to a code about choosing work. I never want to just do a job for a job's sake, I want to do it because it is something I believe in."

Tom Hiddleston continues to prove that he’s an amazing human being as he blogs about his recent trip to Guinea in West Africa. Hiddleton recently went on a trip to Guinea sponsored by UNICEF UK, and after he returned, he's been writing about how his life has changed since the trip.

As he writes on the UNICEF UK Blog, he explains that the trip has changed his life forever.  He says, "In the west, we take our simplest privileges for granted. Many have said this before me; and many will say it after me. It's still true....I am no saviour. I'm absolutely the last person on the planet who can practically help. I don't know how to make the different types of therapeutic feeding milk. I'm no chemist. I'm no doctor. I'm no engineer. I can't manufacture polio vaccines or organise their transportation to the health centres in Saramoussayah or Bissikirima..."
